Most of what gets written about kashmir is written by people who flown in for three days and posted a hundred photographs. We are not those people. We are still here on a slow tuesday in late august, and gulmarg is still doing exactly what the brochure claimed it would. That alone is news.

Where this sits

If you have only ever seen kashmir from a car window or from an instagram caption six times removed, the page you are reading is going to disagree with a lot of what you think.
What you actually do
You arrive at altitude. You eat the local bread. You walk until your legs file a complaint. You stop. The horizon stops too. The mountains do something — they say something — but you don't yet have the vocabulary, so instead you take the bad photo and promise yourself you'll come back in winter when the language is clearer.
That is the kashmir of gulmarg. It is not tourism; it is apprenticeship. You are not on holiday. You are learning how to breathe all over again.
What the locals know
They know apharwat peak snow. They know gulmarg meadow flowers. They know that no season repeats. The second week of high is not the same as the first. They know to look east at dawn for the dal lake shikara at dawn, and to look west an hour later for the better view of the same thing.
They also know — and this is the part brochures won't tell you — that the postcard shot of kashmir is one of the easier things to capture. The hard thing to capture is how the light moves in ten-minute intervals, and why a two-day difference in arrival changes everything.
When to go, and when not to
Go in the seasons window. Don't go in the rain if you haven't done this before. Don't believe anyone who says it's a five-day trip — add three buffer days for the slow weather event that always happens between the great day and the next great day. Pack less than you think; you'll complain about the weight within the first kilometre.
Here's the real advice, in case you missed the subtext: visit kashmir once with a plan, once without one. The first trip will tame you. The second trip will be the one you remember forever.
The second trip, for the record, is also the cheaper one. By then you know which equipment you actually need, which lodges take online reservations and which insist on a walk-in, and which of your well-meaning friends are built for the altitude and which are built for the airport lounge. You also know, with the certainty that only experience buys, that the quiet valley is always one more ridge away from the busy one, and that the badge of honour at the trail end is simply the quiet one.
What to bring back that isn't a thing
Two things, neither of which weigh anything.
First: the quiet confidence that comes from navigating a region where everyone else is looking at their phone. Second: a slightly deeper respect for the women and men who keep kashmir running — the yaks, the donkeys, the truck drivers, the family who runs the teahouse where you finally understood what the kashmir night actually sounds like, the doctor at the district hospital who waves off a headache as altitude and sends you back up with water.
Both of those fit in your hand. Neither of them expire. You can also, if you want, bring back a small bar of local chocolate and a slightly warped view of the world. The chocolate should be consumed within a week; the warped view is more durable.
