Solang Paragliding: Soar Above the Himalayas

Solang Valley sits at 2,560m above sea level, 14km from Manali town, and it is one of the most accessible high-altitude paragliding sites in the world. From the launch pad at Dhundi (approximately 3,100m), you will find yourself airborne above the Beas River valley with the Pir Panjal range stretching across the horizon — it is a perspective on the Himalayas that nothing else matches.

Why Solang is India's Paragliding Capital

Three factors make Solang uniquely suited for paragliding:

  • Consistent thermals — Afternoon solar heating creates predictable rising air columns from the valley floor, extending flight times to 20–30 minutes routinely
  • APPI-certified operator ecosystem — Manali has a concentrated community of experienced tandem pilots, most trained under APPI (Association of Paragliding Pilots International) standards
  • Scenic diversity — Gliding over alpine meadows, past waterfalls, and above the treeline offers visual variety that no coastal paragliding site can match

2026 Season and Flying Conditions

  • March–June: Prime season — stable air, longest flights (up to 45 minutes), clearest skies
  • July–August: Monsoon months — NOT recommended for flying; conditions are unstable and many operators shut down
  • September–November: Second flying season — autumn clarity is exceptional, flights of 20–30 minutes common
  • December–February: Winter flying available but limited — cold thermals, shorter flights, only for experienced pilots

Best time of day: Morning flights (9am–12pm) offer calmer air and are recommended for first-timers. Afternoon thermals (1pm–4pm) are stronger and better for experienced pilots seeking dynamic flight.

Tandem vs. Solo Paragliding

Tandem Flights (Recommended for First-Timers)

You fly with a certified pilot in a two-seater harness. No experience required — the pilot handles all canopy control. You simply sit back, enjoy the view, and follow basic safety instructions during launch and landing.

  • Duration: 15–30 minutes typical
  • Cost: ₹1,800–₹3,500 per person
  • Weight limits: Typically 30–95 kg
  • Age limit: Generally 14–65 years with guardian consent for minors

Solo Paragliding (PG License Required)

If you hold an APPI or IPPI tandem pilot license, you can fly solo in designated zones. Rental equipment is available from operators in Solang.

Safety Standards and Operator Checklist

Unfortunately, not all operators in Solang maintain the same safety standards. Before booking, verify:

  • Operator is registered with the Manali Adventure Association (MAA)
  • Pilots hold valid APPI/IPPI tandem certification
  • Equipment is less than 5 years old with documented annual inspections
  • First aid kit and emergency communication (radio/mobile) is carried on every flight
  • Insurance coverage for passengers is included

What to Expect on Flight Day

  1. Briefing (30 min): Pilot explains body position, launch commands, landing approach, and emergency procedures
  2. Gear fitting (15 min): Harness and helmet are fitted and checked
  3. Transport to launch: 20-minute drive from Solang base to Dhundi launch pad
  4. Pre-flight check (10 min): Pilot inspects canopy, lines, and carabiners
  5. Launch: Run 3–5 steps off the slope; canopy inflates behind you
  6. Flight: 15–30 minutes of pure aerial freedom
  7. Landing: Pilot executes a gentle slope landing; standard running finish

Photography and Videography

Most operators offer add-on GoPro video packages (₹500–₹1,000). Some have HD footage packages with professional editing. Request this when booking — it is harder to arrange on the day.

Combining Paragliding with Other Adventures

Solang is more than paragliding. The area offers:

  • Snow activities: Skiing and snowboarding in winter months (December–February)
  • ATV rides: Quad bike trails through Solang meadows
  • Zorbing: Available at Solang base, purely for laughs
  • Trekking: Short day hikes to Solang's upper meadows

What to Wear and Bring

  • Comfortable, windproof layers (temperature drops 5–8°C at altitude)
  • Closed-toe shoes (mandatory — sandals are not permitted)
  • Sunglasses with strap (sun protection is essential at altitude)
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+
  • Mobile phone in a secure pocket for photos
